Math:This week, we'll continue our work with graphs by reading the book Chrysanthemum and then counting the letters in each of our names to compare the quantities. Students will use their new math vocabulary words DATA and BAR GRAPH while collecting the information from the group to create a class graph.
We will begin to establish math workshop procedures and expectations through a series of lessons. We will discuss what math workshop should sound and look like. We will also talk about how to be a good math partner and how we can use math tools to help us solve problems.
Towards the end of the week, students will also set up their math journal. They will learn that a math journal is an organized collection of thoughts, ideas, sketches, data (information), and equations.
Science: Children are natural scientists! This week we dip our toes into the beginning of our science exploration. We will pose the question, "What is a scientist?" then create a list of characteristics and actions. We will also set up student science journals that will be used to record their own observations, claims, and evidence as they continue to develop a love of questioning, exploring, and making conclusions about their world.
Social Studies: This week in social studies we will continue to practice our classroom routines and expectations. We will start by focusing on safety in the classroom by making safety tip stars to hang in our classroom. We'll follow this by brainstorming a list of ideas for being a great classmate. We'll finish our week by learning the iPad rules for our classroom, and using the iPads to make group videos showing what it means to be a good classmate.
