MATH
This week in math during calendar time, we will be focusing on a number each day. For instance, on Tuesday we will be focusing on the number 14 (since it is our 14th day of school). We will practice writing this number in written form, standard form (14) and expanded form (10+4=14), and model form. We will also build this number using ten frames.
This week, the students will be introduced to a counting around the room activity. We will be practicing counting forward and backwards by 1's. For another counting activity, the students will introduced to arrow arithmetic. For instance, the teacher may show the student 25 -->. The students will use a 120 chart to help them figure out the answer (which is 25+1=26.) We will also be working on building a pocket number chart 1-120. We will be working on building this chart over the next couple months.
We will be finishing up our station rotation from last week. The students will rotate between four different stations:
Partner Work - Bears in Cave (combinations of 10) and comparing numbers card game
Independent - Mystery number picture
Technology - The students will be working on setting up their Dreambox account and password. A parent letter will be sent home soon regarding the program and student login information.
For a lesson, the students will be participating in a 3 Act Task this week. For the 1st TASK the students will watch a short video of someone filling a light bulb with skittles. After the video, the teacher will ask the students what they notice and wonder. Then the students will decide on a number that is way to low of a number and one that is to high of a number and ESTIMATE a good idea of the number of skittles in the light bulb. Next, the teacher will show the students ACT 2 - which is the amount of skittles per color. The students will use tools (counters, 120 chart, expo markers) to determine the total number of skittles. Finally, the students will view ACT 3 to confirm their answer.
We will have a conversation about what was the best way to count the skittles quickly (by 1s, 2s, 5's, or 10s). The teacher will show 91 with base 10 blocks and then just with one units. We will discuss how using base ten blocks (groups of 10) is an easier way to count.

Towards the end of the week, the students will be rotating through four different stations again throughout two days.
SCIENCE
This week in Science, we will finish up learning about how to keep our teeth healthy and reflect on healthy habits to keep germs away. After looking at our "germs" in a black light last week, the students are very good at identifying where we pick up germs and that we wash our hands. Our healthy habits will also include eating a balanced meal, exercising and getting plenty of rest! We are hoping these lessons will help keep our kids from getting sick this year!

SOCIAL STUDIES
This week in Social Studies, we will continue learning all about community helpers. The students will write and draw a picture about what community helper they want to be when they grow up!
