Math
Your child brought home a math review sheet last Friday. We will have an end of nine week math test this Thursday. Please have your child complete the review sheet and turn it on Thursday.
Throughout the week, the students will practicing generating addition and subtraction word problems. The teacher will show the students a themed picture (a beach, a garden, etc.). The teacher will model how to generate story problem by thinking aloud to show the students how to create an addition word problem. For instance, the teacher might say, "when I look at this picture I notice that there are several flowers in the garden. I will write a story problem about picking flowers in my garden at home".
The teacher will show the students step by step how to create and solve the story problem. The students will practice creating and generating their own addition and subtraction story problems. After the students write their own story problem they will switch with a partner and solve.

We will continue solving problems using a multitude of strategies. One strategy the students may use is the Use 10 strategy. For example, when solving the number sentence 9+3 you can use a ten by adding 1 to 9 and then add on 2 more. Another strategy students can use when adding is knowing their doubles facts (ex. 8+8). If you know your doubles it will also help you when adding near doubles such as 8+9. If you know 8+8 is 16 then 8+9 must be 17 because 9 is one more than 8. |
Science
This week in Science we will wrap up our lesson on observing, comparing, describing, and sorting components of soil by texture, size, and color. We will be exploring and observing top soil, sandy soil, and clay. We will begin to focus on water and how it is a useful natural resource.
