Math
We will be introducing fractions this week! We will be learning about equal and unequal parts. Two "pretend" pizzas will be delivered to the classroom that the teacher will share with one student. One pizza will have unequal parts and the other pizza will have equal parts. We will discuss how the pizza delivered with unequal parts wouldn't be a "fair share." We will also read the book, Give Me Half to help us understand equal and unequal parts. We will discuss vocab words for fourths, quarter, and halves.
The students will explore partitioning whole shapes into halves and and putting halves together to make a whole to build their understanding that halves are two equal parts. The SW explore partitioning a whole into halves in different ways to build the understanding that halves can look different as long as they are two equal parts.
The students will also explore partitioning whole shapes into fourths and put 4 fourths together to make a whole. The SW explore partitioning a whole into fourths in different ways (4 square shaped equal parts, 4 triangle shaped equal parts. etc.) to build the understanding that fourths can look different as long as they are four equal parts. We will discuss that a shape divided into fourths and quarters is the same.
During small groups, the S will use wikki sticks or pipe cleaners to partition shapes into halves and fourths. They will also use the sticks or pipe cleaners to show equal/non-equal.
In math on the 100th day of School (Friday, Jan. 25th) we will be doing some fun activities in class! Your child will get to write about what they would like to do if they had a $100, play a race to 100 game, and practice skip counting to 100!

Science and SS
This week in Science, we will continue learning about Objects in the Sky. We will be learning about how stars cannot be seen during the day because of the the glare of the sunlight. Your child will also create their own constellation and write about it!
This week in SS, we will be learning all about Abraham Lincoln! We will discuss the contributions he made to our nation.
