Math
This week in math, we will start a new unit on Personal Financial Literacy. We will learn the words income (money earned), need (people need food to live), want (children want toys to play with), save, spend, and charity (helping others).
We will read the book, A Chair For My Mother to help us understand these words. While reading we will answer questions like, what are reasons families might save money? What are some ways people save money? How does your family decide how to spend money?
In your child's binder, you will notice a Classroom Economy Chart (it will be located in the front cover sleeve pocket.) This week, your child will have an opportunity to earn pretend money for following classroom procedures and completing jobs in the classroom. For instance, your child will be able to earn money for morning routine (putting away backpack, writing in their planner, etc.), being prepared for switch class, and dismissal routine (stacking chair, getting backpack out of closet, etc.).
Each time the students complete a specific procedure/ job they will mark an X on their economy chart and the teacher will initial. We will discuss the importance of following classroom rules and procedures to earn money because that's their job as students. We will discuss that if they do not complete their job or do not do certain procures the correct way they will not earn as much money.
If the students get 13-15 marks (X) they will earn $7 towards the end of the week. If they get 9-12 marks they will earn $6. However, if they get 8 marks or less they will earn only $3.
At the end of the week, they will be taking their hard earned money to the 1st Grade Super Store to "spend" it on various items ranging in price. We will have a box in the store for the students to donate some of their money to charity. At the end of the week, we will count all the money donated between all the first grade classes! We are looking forward to a fun week learning about Personal Financial Literacy!
